THE OTHER IVÁNYI: Dr. Béla Iványi-Grünwald Jr.

Abstract

This article examines the life and scholarly work of Béla Iványi-Grünwald Jr., the lesser-known son of the Hungarian painter Béla Iványi-Grünwald and his wife, Irén Matild Bilcz. Born in Som, Iványi-Grünwald Jr. pursued a career as an archivist, historian, and private university lecturer. His intellectual and profession- al trajectory led him from Nagybánya to Budapest and Kecskemét, then to Vienna, and eventually to England, where he settled in London and later died in Colchester. In Hungary, he became known for his economic analysis of István Széchenyi’s work Hitel and his contributions to the interpretation of modern Hungarian history within the scholarly framework established by historian trio Hóman–Szekfű–Kerényi. During Second World War he opposed the political stance of the Hungarian government, which led to the revocation of his citizenship in 1942. Despite this, he continued his scholarly work in exile, supported Hungarian emigrants, and assembled a significant Hungarica collection. Ashe had no children from his marriages, this branch of the Grünwald family became extinct.
